The Creator - The Light of the World - The God of Israel

Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” - John 8:58

When God revealed Himself to Moses in the burning bush, He instructed Moses to tell the people that He should be called “I AM.” God’s nature is not influenced by how we refer to Him. Our knowledge of God does not define Him. God is who He is, regardless of our perspective or opinion of Him. People do not influence God’s nature, character, integrity, ability, or purpose.

“Jesus said to them…”

Since Jesus is God in the flesh, He declared the same principle. Jesus possesses all of God’s unique attributes in human form. Jesus is the same eternally self-existing, self-sustaining, glorious Creator of all things who spoke to Moses through the burning bush. This remains true regardless of human opinion or understanding. Our knowledge or faith regarding Jesus as YAHWEH in flesh STILL doesn’t change who He is, what He’s about, or what He’s going to do.

“Most assuredly, I say to you…”

This is the point Jesus made when He addressed the Jewish religious leaders in John 8:58. Jesus said, “Most assuredly,” to speak confidently and truthfully about the point He was making. Jesus said, “I say to you,” to inform His audience that the truth He was speaking wasn’t speculation or conjecture from others. When Jesus said, “Before Abraham was,” He described His eternal essence. Jesus may have been born during the days of Caesar Augustus, but that doesn’t indicate the beginning of His existence.

“Before Abraham was, I AM…”

When Jesus said, “I AM,” He declared Himself to be YAHWEH. Jesus affirmed that He is “the Existing One.” He is the Creator and Controller of all things. He is the One who uniquely joined Himself to His creation through His covenants with Israel. His incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension – all historically documented by eyewitnesses in scripture – prove this to be true. The change in His appearance didn’t alter His nature or purpose. So, when we pray “in Jesus’ name,” this is who we’re praying to.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, it’s challenging to grasp Your eternal nature and glory. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the truth that Your Word proclaims and believe it is true. Jesus, we trust that before You were born in a barn, You existed with the same degree of power, righteousness, and purpose. You are the God who called, commanded, and equipped Moses for the works we witness in scripture, and have called, commanded, and equipped us just the same. We believe You were the one who urged Abraham to leave the corrupt environment in which he was raised to journey to the better place You would reveal, and have called us out of sin in the same way. Help us to navigate today’s circumstances, recalling the works You’ve accomplished since the beginning and how they lead to the promises You will fulfill in the end. We pray these things in the eternally glorious name of Jesus. Amen.
