Day 6 - How "Deep" is God?

“Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?” - Job 11:7
Consider the question posed in Job 11:7. Can you “search” for God, let alone the “deep” things of God? Where would you begin looking to find the invisible God, whose glory is described as “unapproachable light”? Where would you start searching for the God who holds the universe in the span of His hand while also dwelling in the hearts of His servants? How, then, can anyone seek and discover the “deep” things of God? The King James Version of the Bible puts it more bluntly: Can you find out the Almighty unto perfection?
“Can you search out the deep things of God…”
What are the limits of the eternally self-existing and self-sustaining God? His creation of the universe demonstrates that His power and wisdom are boundless and immeasurable. His glory fills the heavens and the earth. He gives and equips life and purpose for every living thing on earth AND in heaven, all at once, and does not grow weak, tired, or confused. Who can fully and perfectly understand these aspects of God?

“Can you find out the limits of the Almighty…”
Knowing this, is it possible to attempt to understand God apart from His revelation and the Word He has declared? Who can speculate on the truth about God? Who can articulate the details of God’s self-existing nature? Who can fully comprehend God’s plans, knowing that He uses every facet of His creation for purposes that transcend our physical reality and the things we can see? Who can process all of those variables and determine the truth of God independently? Can the human brain process and understand that information? Nope!
We will never know the true depths of God’s glory in this life, nor will we comprehend the full extent of God’s plans and purposes. We cannot even fully grasp the logistics, mechanics, or God’s motives concerning our own salvation! This means that God must be the One who reveals the truth to us. The things we can know about God must come from the testimony of His Word and be applied with understanding through the power of His Spirit.
Prayer for today
LORD God, please forgive us for the times we’ve presumed to know more than we do. Keep us from arrogant attitudes fueled by our training, experience, credentials, rank, or ambition. You are God! Your wisdom transcends all things. Your purposes are beyond our understanding. Your ways are FAR beyond ours. We humbly ask that You provide us with wisdom from above. Help us recognize the depths of our limitations, knowing that You are FAR above all people, traditions, and ideologies. Thank You, God, for giving us the privilege of knowing You to ANY degree. Thank You for Your work as Jesus Christ to make that knowledge accessible, supremely valuable, and fruitful. It’s in the name of Jesus that we pray these things. Amen.
