And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation…” - Revelation 5:9

In Jeremiah Chapter 32, the scriptures tell an interesting story. God commanded Jeremiah to buy a field from his uncle even though he was in prison, having been jailed for prophesying about God’s coming judgment from Babylon. God wanted Jeremiah to buy land while imprisoned, as the people faced oppression from a foreign enemy, knowing they would soon be conquered and driven from the land. None of these circumstances mattered to God. He encouraged Jeremiah to take possession of the title deed. God’s purpose was to show that He doesn’t need ideal conditions to make valuable purchases. God’s redemption is guaranteed no matter what.

“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals…”

The testimony of the Book of Revelation shows that the servants of God in heaven sing praises to Jesus for this very thing. Jesus is able to redeem His possession that was previously purchased under distressful circumstances. Jesus is worthy to take the scroll in His possession – the scroll that documents the will and purposes of the Father concerning judgments and blessings. No one else carries the weight or has value measuring up to the Father to take this document from His hand. Only Jesus is deserving to take the Father’s possession and handle it like His own.

“For You were slain and have redeemed us to God…”

Jesus’ blood sacrifice makes Him worthy. He came as God incarnate to fulfill the role of God’s Lamb, taking away the sins of the world. He proved that He transcends corruption, sin, death, and hell. However, Jesus did not die peacefully in His sleep; He gave Himself up to the cross. The blood He shed served as spiritual currency to buy the souls of His people, and that transaction occurred under the most hostile circumstances while we were yet sinners, rejecting Him even as He tried to bless us. Jesus did not stay dead, though. He “was” slain, indicating the past tense. He is not dead anymore. Jesus proved that His holiness, righteousness, and love transcend life, death, time, and space. He is one with the Most High God, which is why He is the only One worthy to carry out the Father’s purposes to judge and bless.

“Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation…”

God wanted Jeremiah to purchase land during a time of distress, requiring him to trust in God’s promise that things wouldn’t remain distressful. Likewise, Jesus has called His people to follow Him, trusting that while we suffer for His name’s sake, things won’t stay distressful. We are His purchased possession, whether Jew or Gentile. His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for ALL sins ever committed in any part of the world at any time in human history. Jesus died a real physical death as a human being, but being God, His blood maintains the same eternal qualities that He possessed before His incarnation. This is why heaven focuses on Him. This is why heaven sings praises to Him. This is why Jesus is so good as the God Most High. Nothing can hinder Him from fulfilling His promises to bring us into His presence because Jesus transcends all circumstantial and spiritual factors that threaten us or attempt to hinder Him. The testimony of Jeremiah proves that true, and the testimony of the Book of Revelation also confirms it.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for this glimpse into the future. The Apostle John was troubled when he realized that no one was able to take the scroll from Your hand to fulfill Your eternal purposes – until Jesus. He alone is worthy. We trust that, while life is difficult now as we suffer for Your namesake, You are able to redeem us and will do so soon. We look forward to that day. Come quickly, LORD Jesus; even so, come quickly. Amen.
