And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. - 1 John 5:20
Eternal life is not solely a New Testament idea just because that phrase appears more often there. The Old Testament includes accounts of individuals being raised from the dead, showing that God can give life after death and is willing to do so. God made an eternal covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David, making them direct beneficiaries of those promises. How can they benefit from eternal covenants if they don’t live forever? The prophecies in Daniel Chapter 12 show that Old Testament believers will be resurrected at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to receive the inheritance of God’s promises with them. God’s promises in the Old Testament are based on eternity, just like the terms of God’s New Covenant, which is actually found in the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah.
“We know that the Son of God has come…”
When Jesus spoke about eternal life in the New Testament, He was referring to the promises that the Father had already made. The scriptures teach that the Messiah of Israel (the Christ) is the One appointed to fulfill every eternally unconditional promise of the Father. Since these promises are eternal and require holiness and righteousness for perfect fulfillment, only God Himself is qualified to accomplish them. Therefore, the Messiah must be God. The Apostle John discusses this in 1 John 5:20. The phrase "Son of God” indicates that Jesus came as God incarnate to share knowledge of eternal life by meeting scriptural requirements that enable its availability. Referring to Jesus as the "Son of God" underscores His divine nature, affirming His qualification as the Messiah and His role in delivering the promised gift of eternal life.

“Has given us an understanding, that we may know Him…”
These truths were confusing and misunderstood by Israel before Jesus’ arrival. The work He did during His ministry, along with His death, resurrection, ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, brought understanding to His followers. Jesus’ role as God in the flesh helped John and other disciples understand the truth about God, His Word, and how it would impact their lives as believers. Jesus’ ministry revealed the truth that had always existed but was not fully understood until He came to provide supernatural insight. Still, John’s testimony emphasizes that God has always been true. Despite Jesus' physical appearance differing from what people expected, His testimony confirms that God and the promise of eternal life have remained constant. That is why Hebrews 13:8 states that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He has always been the only way to the promise of eternal life made long ago.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for granting us an understanding of Your truth that we could not have achieved without Your divine intervention. Thank You for the promise of eternal life and for remaining faithful to Your word, regardless of how we have responded to it. Help us ensure our witness of You is eternally focused and unchanging, consistent with Your own nature, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
