Day 1 - How Did God Do That?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. - Genesis 1:1
One of the words that God uses to describe Himself is “wonderful.” This means that God is “full of wonder.” This concept, in the original Hebrew context, suggests that God is difficult to understand. One could argue that God is impossible to fully understand. That’s why Romans 11:34 quotes from the Old Testament to say, “For who has known the mind of the LORD?”
“In the beginning…”
The first verse in the Bible makes this concept clear. First, the scriptures refer to a time that none of us can relate to. When the Bible says, “In the beginning,” it describes the time before the very first day of the universe. God created our universe and everything in it, meaning He existed before the universe was created. While the testimony of Genesis Chapter 1 outlines God’s work in creating the universe, we can’t overlook the fundamental point about God. He existed BEFORE “the beginning!”

“God created…”
Secondly, the Hebrew word for “God” in Genesis 1:1 is “Elohim.” This term reflects two aspects of God’s identity: His triune nature, which includes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and His supreme majesty, which originates from who He is.
“The heavens and the earth…”
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were equal participants in creating the heavens and the earth. How does this work? The scriptures offer some insight into the different levels of involvement that each had, but the truth is that no one fully understands it. That’s what makes God who He is. How did the mind of the Father conceive the ideas He manifested in the universe? What was His inspiration? What did Jesus look like in the beginning, before He took on the form of flesh? How did He make everything function perfectly, starting from nothing? What was the world like with the Holy Spirit hovering over it before sin? When you make the concerted effort to take time and reflect on the Bible’s first sentence, there is A LOT to ponder. Many questions we might ask about God can’t be answered in this life. That’s what makes Him who He is. He is Elohim: The Three-In-One-Supremely-Majestic-Creator. We’re just part of His work…
Prayer for today
Our God in heaven, we acknowledge that You are supremely glorious. You are beyond our capacity to reason and comprehend. We believe that You existed before all things, created all things, and that all things exist in You, for Your purposes, to manifest Your glory. Protect us from the temptation to doubt You or presume to understand all of Your ways. Keep us from the mindset that leads us to think we can be You—providing for ourselves, directing ourselves, seeking praise and glory for ourselves. You alone are the God of glory and majesty. Help us to walk by faith in the testimony of Your Word, led by the indwelling of Your Spirit, to bring glory to Your name, whether we comprehend Your works or not. We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
