And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory. - 1 Timothy 3:16
The Bible acknowledges that God is mysterious, indicating that certain aspects of Him are hidden or secret. To know God, we must learn about Him through the tools He has provided. If some aspects of God are concealed, only He can reveal them. If certain things about God remain a mystery, only God can unveil them. Unless we approach God in the manner He prescribed, we will never know the truth regarding His “mysteries.”
“God was manifested in the flesh…”
1 Timothy 3:16 clearly reveals how to understand the truth about God by presenting the testimony of His work. God was manifested in the flesh. God’s will and purpose, as declared in the scriptures, became flesh. The mind of God was physically revealed. The truth of God—His identity, character, integrity, purposes, and promises—was made visible through the incarnation, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.

“Justified in the Spirit…”
How do we know that’s true? Jesus was justified in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit “showed, exhibited, displayed, and declared” the truth of Jesus’ identity. This occurred at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, when He was baptized, and many witnesses saw the Spirit descend from heaven and rest upon Him. Jesus was uniquely filled with the Holy Spirit to perform miracles as God incarnate throughout His ministry, and the miracle people witnessed at His baptism proved it. Angels—both good and evil—recognized and acknowledged Jesus. They were sent to announce His birth and ministered to Him during His temptation in the wilderness. Demons openly confessed Jesus’ authority and were fearful of Him. Gentiles received the truth about Jesus “preached to them” through the work of God’s church, which was initially Jewish. Gentiles heard and believed in the testimony of the Jewish Messiah and were filled with the same power of the Spirit that equipped Jesus’ original disciples. As a result, people from all over the world have come to faith.
“Believed on in the world, received up in glory…”
While understanding the truth about God is challenging, He makes it known. He revealed the truth through His Word, which became flesh. That is how God chose to reveal Himself. This is the sole channel through which we can learn. The hidden aspects of God are uncovered only through the details of the testimony outlined in 1 Timothy 3:16. God is exactly who He claims to be. His promises are true, validated by the RIDICULOUS abundance of evidence. Nonetheless, the evidence of God’s mysteries is found in just one place…
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing previously hidden truths about You. Help us trust in the revelation You have provided and how You delivered it. Thank You for making the incomprehensible more comprehensible through the testimony of Your Son and the power of Your Spirit, according to Your Word. The tools are available; help us use them properly, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
