“I have made the earth, the man and the beast that [are] on the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me.” - Jeremiah 27:5

One of the biggest disagreements people have with God isn’t about His existence. The Bible shows that we’ve all been given enough information through God’s creation to understand His eternal power and godhead. The problem comes when we try to grasp just how powerful God is. Creation reveals that God is FAR more powerful than we are, which often challenges our view of how life should be. If God is powerful enough to create everything, He's powerful enough to influence factors in life that might conflict with our personal goals. That’s where the dilemma lies…

God doesn’t care if we’re offended by His power or how He uses it. He isn’t affected by our doubts or disagreements. Jeremiah 27:5 shows that God has no issue stating the truth about who He is. In fact, this message was directed at kings in the regions around Israel. God was conveying these points to men who believed they held power. They were mistaken.

“I have made the earth…”

God created the universe and everything in it. He spoke all things into existence, and by the power of those declarations, He immediately brought life and purpose to it all! Everything belongs to God because He is the Creator. Everything remains His because He is the LORD God Almighty. God made everything on His own—through His great power and His outstretched arm. He didn’t need help, ideas, opinions, or permission. When God spoke, there was no delay or opposition. God created all things through the effect of His own attributes. Therefore, when God wishes to do anything with His creation, He can, and no one can oppose Him. God created Adam and Eve in His likeness, making them stewards of His creation. The earth and the people were His possession, appointed as servants for His purposes.

“And have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me…”

God has given purpose and authority to the human race as it seems good and proper to Him, for His own reasons. God gives life and takes it away. He provides function and purpose. God grants authority and resources. He is the cause of everything that occurs in our universe, including all world events, and His power over these matters is unending and unchanging. This was God’s ultimate message when addressing these kings. Those kings may have had their own plans for their lives and kingdoms. God was about to intervene in all of those affairs to fulfill His purposes. This emphasizes that God has a fixed purpose for everything that happens, and regardless of our opinions about the circumstances, God is always doing what is right in His eyes at all times and in all places. This remains true whether people agree with it or not.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, we thank You for the testimony of Your Word, which teaches us that all things are always under Your control. Your power doesn’t change or fade. Forgive us for the times we struggle against Your purposes. Help us remember that, while You are the Almighty Judge, You are merciful and gracious to forgive us, and powerful enough to bring our dead souls to life through the work and testimony of Jesus Christ. Equip us to serve the things that “seem proper to You” so that we can bring glory to You in Jesus’ name. Amen.
