The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
“For I [am] the LORD. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass; it will no more be postponed; for in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and perform it,” says the Lord GOD. - Ezekiel 12:25

Many people talk about doing things that never get done. Sometimes, we forget; sometimes, we lack the ability; and sometimes, we just lose interest and don’t care. No matter the reason, the value of our words when it comes to commitment varies greatly, to say the least. God doesn’t have this problem. When God speaks, things happen! Everything God says comes to pass 100% of the time! This is why we need to handle and study the Bible carefully.

One challenge in studying God’s Word is that we often miss its eternal nature. God is eternal, and His Word is also eternal. When God makes promises, they come from an eternal perspective with everlasting significance. When God speaks, it may take a long time for those promises to be fulfilled. God does not operate on our schedules. While His Word clearly influences daily life, every action He takes considers eternity and arises from a spiritual reality. God will fulfill what He has promised, but not always in the ways or timeframes we expect.

“I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass…”

In Ezekiel 12:25, God assures His people that He will do everything He promises. God was speaking about judgment! The Southern Kingdom of Judah passionately embraced idolatry and offended God in every possible way. God sent many prophets to warn them of the terrible consequences they would face if they didn’t repent. God was patient, but the people ignored His warnings. They were presuming, mistaking God’s patience for indifference. Word about God’s impending judgment spread for a long time. Since that judgment hadn’t arrived, they assumed God was bluffing. False prophets spoke against God’s warnings, claiming that the lack of judgment meant the people would be blessed. They were wrong.

“It will no more be postponed…”

In Ezekiel 12:25, God put His foot down. God wasn’t going to show patience anymore. He was tired of the false prophets and skeptics. He was going to do what He said—and He did! God enabled King Nebuchadnezzar of the Babylonian Empire to oppress, attack, suffocate, and completely destroy that region of Israel. In 586 BC, God proved that when He says He will do something, He means it! Events like these demonstrate that God will fulfill all His promises. So, if God’s Word is eternally unchanging regarding His judgments, the same applies to His promises of salvation, redemption, and restoration. These truths remain true regardless of how long we think God is taking…

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which clearly demonstrates Your commitment to fulfilling Your promises. Keep us from being prideful about Your Word, reminding us that You operate from an eternal and spiritual perspective. Protect us from indifference regarding Your promises to judge and bless, especially if You don’t respond within the timeframe we expect. Jesus, You promised that You would return for Your church before unleashing Your wrath upon this world. Help us live with a sense of urgent anticipation, even though this promise was made so long ago. You are God, so we submit to You, Your Word, and its timing in Jesus’ name. Amen.
