“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us.” - Matthew 1:23
The birth and circumstances of Jesus were foretold through Bible prophecy nearly seven hundred years before they occurred. Matthew 1:23 quotes Isaiah 7:14. In Isaiah’s prophecy, God introduced His promise by stating that His miracle would serve as a sign to demonstrate His faithfulness to His covenants with Israel. The virgin birth of Jesus was not a random miracle. God said He would do something impossible to prove His commitment to fulfilling His everlasting, unconditional covenants.
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child…”
Think about God’s promise and what it reveals about His integrity and the uniqueness of His love. God didn’t just make a good promise; He also swore to perform a miracle that proves He’s trustworthy to fulfill it. Who does that?

The proof that God provided to demonstrate His faithfulness to His Word is “the immaculate conception.” The proof God presented is just as difficult to believe as the promise He was proving. Anyone old enough to know the story of “The Birds and The Bees” knows what must happen for a woman to become pregnant. It’s science, but it’s not rocket science. How does a virgin become pregnant? See, God wasn’t just proving His faithfulness to His Word. He also demonstrated that He can do whatever it takes to fulfill His Word, even if it seems impossible.
“They shall call His name Immanuel…”
When was Jesus ever called “Immanuel”? He wasn’t. Yet, the prophecy of Isaiah said that the Child from this miraculous birth would be called this. It doesn’t mean Immanuel is the title people will call Him by. It means that “Immanuel” will define His nature and character. In other words, the Child would literally be, “God with us.” The proof of God’s promises is found in the miracle of God’s incarnation as Israel’s Messiah! God said He would dwell among His people. He did – as Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, where God implanted Himself into the womb of Mary without the aid of a man. Jesus was born as God in the flesh, fulfilling the title “Immanuel.” God did all of this to prove that He is able and willing to do what He says, whether we understand it or not.
“God with us…”
And that’s what love is: God’s incomprehensible work to perform all the miracles needed to cleanse the souls of those who repent and believe, including His incarnation, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and indwelling of His Spirit.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we confess that it’s impossible to fully understand Your nature as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Still, the testimony of Your Son remains true in our hearts because of Your work, according to the Bible. Thank You for the promises You’ve made and the evidence You’ve given throughout the ages to show You are trustworthy in all things. The problems we face today are much less than the challenge of the virgin birth of Jesus! Nothing is too hard for You. If You performed that miracle to prove Your faithfulness to Your covenants, help us to trust You with the issues we must handle. Thank You in advance for the miracles You’ll work in our lives to glorify Yourself. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
