The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. - John 1:1-2

One of the most difficult parts of understanding God is His “triune” nature. The scriptures teach that God is “one.” In Deuteronomy 6:4, the Bible clearly states, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!” The scriptures show that God reveals Himself as three distinct, yet eternally united entities, each with a distinct nature, character, and purpose. The scriptures confirm from the beginning that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The key to understanding this complex idea is recognizing the different ways God manifests in these forms.

“In the beginning…”

Much of the confusion about God comes from the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Many believe that since Jesus was born in New Testament times, His birth marks the beginning of His existence. His title as the “Son” leads many to think that Jesus is a younger descendant of God who came into being at the time of the Immaculate Conception. However, this is not what the Bible teaches. This confusion and false doctrine have been issues for a long time. That’s why the Apostle John began his eyewitness account of Jesus’ testimony “in the beginning.”

Open Bible

“Was the Word…”

John’s introduction closely mirrors the opening of the Bible. However, the time reference in John is different. Genesis Chapter 1 relates to the start of time in our universe within the physical realm. In contrast, John 1:1 refers to the absolute origin of all things, even before the Genesis 1:1 timeline. According to John, “the Word” existed before God said, “Let there be light.” Here, “the Word” represents the true revelation of God. The revelation of God’s nature, character, attributes, purposes, and promises existed before His creation. The Word existed in two distinct forms: it was “with God” and also “was God” Himself. God was the true revelation of Himself, while another form of that revelation was equal to God in every way!

“He was in the beginning…”

John personified the Word of God by writing, “He was in the beginning with God.” Later, in John 1:14, we’re told that “the Word became flesh,” referring to Jesus Christ. This means Jesus didn’t come into existence when He was born into the world; He existed long before that. He has always existed. We understand that God is eternal, self-existing, and self-sustaining. Jesus is also eternally self-existing and self-sustaining. He is God! As “the Word of God,” Jesus reveals the truth about who God is, expressed in a form that is understandable and beneficial to us. He embodies all of the Father’s attributes, purposes, and promises. This has always been true. Even though Jesus has changed His appearance over the ages, He has never changed in His essence.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to us in ways that are beyond our understanding. While we may not fully comprehend how the Word existed with You in the beginning and later became flesh, the assurance we receive from Your Spirit comforts our hearts, knowing that Jesus Christ embodies everything You are. Jesus, You are God! Thank You for demonstrating the depth of Your greatness by taking on flesh and keeping all of Your holy and transcendent attributes to die for us. Fill us anew with Your Spirit so we can fulfill Your purposes, continually proclaiming the testimony of Your eternally unchanging greatness, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
