“My Father, who has given [them] to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of My Father's hand. I and [My] Father are one.” - John 10:29-30

One way we measure power in our world isn’t just by a person’s ability to acquire something, but also by the ability to maintain possession of it. For example, when looking at powerful kings throughout history, their strength is often judged not only by the size of their kingdoms but also by how long they could sustain control over them. The frequent rise and fall of various kingdoms show that maintaining power and influence is extremely challenging!

“My Father…”

God doesn’t have this weakness. In John 10:29-30, Jesus emphasizes a compelling point about God the Father. He is greater than all. No one has ever taken anything from Him. For example, in Isaiah 40:12, the Bible states that God measured the universe with the span of His hand! The universe fits into His hand! Consider the strength of His grip, having a hand that literally holds all things together. Who else possesses this kind of power, manifested everywhere and at all times in heaven and on earth?

“Is greater than all…”

Jesus also referred to God the Father as HIS Father. Jesus is the Son of God—the Heir of God who embodies all of His eternally unchanging attributes. They are one. They share the same power and authority. So then, how great is Jesus? Throughout history, the Father has uniquely called certain individuals, claiming them as His own possession based on His purposes for their lives. God called Abraham as His own, establishing an eternally unchanging covenant with him to ensure that his descendants through Isaac and Jacob would become a great nation, dwelling within specific borders, so they could be a blessing to all the families of the world. God has never lost possession of Israel, the land, or His ability to bless the world through them. Jesus has the same measure of greatness.

“No one is able to snatch [them] out of My Father's hand…”

Whoever the Father calls is given to Jesus. This principle demonstrates that those whom God calls are His possession. They are taken by His hand—the hand that sustains the universe—and then entrusted to Jesus, God in the flesh. Jesus came into the world to fulfill the Father’s promises about eternal life. He became a man to die for the sins of the world. In fact, Jesus’ blood served as the spiritual currency used to redeem the souls of those the Father called. The power of Jesus’ grip as God in the flesh is so strong that He used His own crucifixion as the means to purchase His own possession. Who else has the power to buy the souls of people throughout history and into the future, through their own blood?

“I and [My] Father are one…”

Has anyone ever taken a single person from God? Jesus died to redeem what belonged to the Father. His resurrection proved that death couldn’t remove His life from His grasp, so how could anything else take His life away? Jesus’ power is indeed greater than all— in heaven, on earth, and everywhere else, at all times! Whoever is in His hand is never separated from Him!

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for using Your power to save us and keep us in Your salvation. Use our lives to serve Your purposes and bring You the glory You deserve for keeping us in the fold of Your goodness, no matter what. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
