The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14

One way to measure greatness is by evaluating how consistently someone has performed well over time. We consider greatness to belong to those who show exceptional skills over long periods. Time plays a vital role when thinking about “the great ones” who have impacted our world, since it’s a difficult factor to manage. As time goes on, circumstances shift, requiring people to adapt. Those labeled as “great” in their fields must handle constant change while maintaining steady performance. That’s not easy, no matter the situation.

Think about how this relates to God’s greatness. God works through every factor that affects life and function in both the universe and the spiritual realm. God existed before everything, and yet, despite the busy activity in heaven and on earth, He stays the same. He clearly said, “For I am the LORD, I do not change,” in Malachi 3:6. God’s ability to stay constant and unchanging forever while dealing with every part of the physical world is beyond understanding! No one equals God’s greatness in this way.

Two small gifts stacked

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

The testimony of John 1:14 adds depth to this truth. When God stated that He doesn’t change, He was referring to His essence. God’s nature remains constant. God’s attributes remain unchanged. God’s purposes and promises are steadfast. However, God’s appearance does change! John’s eyewitness account of Jesus’ testimony begins with “in the beginning,” a time reference that predates Genesis 1:1. John wrote about the Word of God, which refers to the truth regarding God’s identity, character, nature, attributes, purposes, and promises. God’s revelation existed in two forms, both equal in majesty and truth. The truth of God was God Himself. As stated in John 1:14, the truth of God was also made manifest in flesh and blood.

“And we beheld His glory…”

The Bible shows that God has often appeared to people in different forms, but His essence stays the same. His appearance doesn’t change His spiritual DNA. God’s greatness might be experienced differently over time, but it remains fundamentally the same. This was true when the Word became flesh. John saw this firsthand. The Word was God and remained God, even though He was called “Jesus of Nazareth.” John witnessed the amazing glory and grace of God physically shown in Jesus. When John called Jesus "the only begotten of the Father,” he meant that Jesus was one of a kind. God never took human form except in Jesus. The true nature of who God is was revealed in Jesus. Think about the greatness God revealed, not only by staying constant and unchanging since the beginning but also by remaining the same when His divine nature took on flesh and blood.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, Your greatness is truly unmatched! No one can endure like You. We trust in the testimony of Your Word, which tells us that You took on flesh while maintaining Your true nature to offer salvation from sin, death, and hell. No one demonstrates greatness the way You do. Help us respond with gratitude and the boldness to proclaim Your truth in Jesus’ name. Amen.
