Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for a light by day, the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar (The LORD of hosts [is] His name)… - Jeremiah 31:35
We attribute greatness to people based on the quality of their achievements compared to others. We call it “great” when we see someone doing something we haven't witnessed anyone else do. Alexander was referred to as “Alexander the Great” due to the magnitude of his military achievements. He was considered great because the world had never seen anyone lead an army like him to conquer as much territory as he did, especially within the timeframe he accomplished it.
The Bible teaches that God leads an army as well. God is called the “LORD of hosts,” highlighting His control over all armies. However, in Jeremiah 31:35, the scriptures indicate that God’s “army” includes the sun, the moon, and all the stars! God equips the elements of our universe as a general equips his soldiers, commanding them to achieve specific outcomes.

“Who gives the sun for a light by day…”
Who commands light like God? When God created the sun, moon, and stars, He equipped them for His purposes with the light He manifested four days earlier. Once equipped, God appointed their purpose and has continued to use them for His intentions ever since. The universe operates as it does – testifying to God’s glory and sustaining life on planet Earth – because the elements of the universe obey God’s commands in the same way a soldier does.
“Who disturbs the sea, and its waves roar…”
Who commands the universe like God? Who can control the ocean's function and movement? Alexander’s greatness was measured by his achievements with his army and the dominance he displayed. Alexander never ordered the waters of the sea to part. He never commanded the earth to open and swallow people. He never spoke a universe into existence and vowed to use the sun, moon, and stars to judge the world for rejecting him. How, then, can we measure God’s greatness? Consider the extent of control God demonstrates over His army. Reflect on the conquest God will experience when He uses all aspects of His creation to judge evil in this world in the lead-up to the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we trust that You are still on the throne. You control all aspects of Your creation. LORD, we also know that the day is coming when You will use Your creation for destructive purposes to judge the world and the evil that has corrupted it. You will confront Your enemies with Your army. You will prove to everyone that You are the One True Living God. Thank You for exercising Your authority to offer salvation from that judgment. Help us to serve like obedient soldiers today, fighting the good fight of faith for Your glory, to protect people from the coming judgment upon this world. In Jesus’ name – the Commander of the armies of God – we pray these things. Amen!
