The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
“And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.” - Genesis 17:7

God’s greatness is beyond measure, yet He makes specific promises to reveal the extent of His greatness. Without these promises, understanding who God is would be difficult. In this context, God established another “everlasting covenant” to show His unwavering greatness through His actions in fulfilling that covenant. In fact, most scripture directly relates to God’s work connected to this promise. Some might say the Bible can be divided into three sections: Genesis Chapters 1-11, Genesis Chapter 12 - Revelation Chapter 20, and Revelation Chapters 21-22. But what is that large section in the middle? It’s the testimony of God fulfilling the “everlasting covenant” He mentioned in Genesis 17:7.

“I will establish My covenant between Me and you…”

God made a covenant with Abraham and promised to keep that promise forever. This promise was first established in Genesis 12:1-3. Here, God clarifies to Abraham that the terms of the covenant from Genesis Chapter 12 are indeed eternal. God must be eternal to create and fulfill eternal covenants. This means that God’s Word must be as infinite as God Himself. That is why Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away,” in Matthew 24:35. This shows the strength and greatness of God’s Word!

“And your descendants after you in their generations…”

Since God promised Abraham long ago to fulfill certain commitments in the future, His Word cannot change over time, regardless of circumstances. God promised to make Abraham's descendants a great nation, residing within specific boundaries that He would define, and to bless all the families of the earth. God must uphold this covenant with Abraham’s future descendants to fulfill this promise. God desired to be Abraham’s God, and the eternal nature of His covenant with Abraham demonstrates that He also wishes to be the God of all his descendants – those who share the same faith Abraham had in God’s Word, whether Jew or Gentile. How can God do this unless He is eternally unchanging and unwilling to alter His covenant in any way?

“To be God to you and your descendants after you…”

Consider how this reveals God’s greatness. Despite many changes over time, those alterations haven’t affected God or His Word! The testimony of Israel’s history in scripture shows their fickle faith and obedience. God doesn’t change His promises concerning them. The world continues to oppose God, even trying to disprove His existence. There are no changes to scripture or God’s covenants found in the Bible. This highlights the power of God’s eternal nature! This truth about God confirms that His promises to Abraham, Israel, and the world are the most reliable ever. There is nothing more established; there is nothing surer than the Word of God because of who God is!
