"Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son” - Genesis 18:14

God's promises can be hard to understand and accept. For example, the promise of eternal life is difficult because eternity has no end, and no human can fully understand that. Our limited perspective makes it hard to grasp God’s infinite power. But struggles with belief or understanding don’t mean God’s promises are false. Our weaknesses don’t lessen God's strength. Just because our understanding is limited doesn’t mean God’s infinite power is untrue. God is omnipotent, whether we fully understand that or not. He can do all things in any way He chooses, whenever He chooses. History shows this to be true.

"Is anything too hard for the LORD..."

In Genesis Chapter 18, God visited Abraham to reaffirm the covenant He first established in Genesis Chapter 12. God promised to make Abraham a great nation, give him a specific land inheritance, and bless all the families of the earth through him via a particular descendant. The first part of that promise required Abraham to have many children. He was seventy-five years old and childless when God initially made the promise. By the time God approached Abraham in Genesis Chapter 18, he was ninety-nine years old, and his wife was only ten years younger. They still had not conceived a single child, let alone enough to form “a great nation.”

“At the appointed time..."

When God spoke to Abraham in Genesis Chapter 18, Abraham found it hard to believe the truth of God’s promise. How could people that old have a baby? When Abraham’s wife heard God tell Abraham that she would give birth in a year, she quietly laughed to herself. She clearly couldn’t imagine having a baby at ninety years old. God didn’t find it funny. He asked a simple question: Is anything too difficult for YAHWEH, the eternally self-existing, self-sustaining Creator who made all things out of nothing by the power of His Word? Is anything too hard for the LORD who called Himself the Almighty God not long before?

“Sarah shall have a son..."

God fulfilled His promise, showing His power and presence everywhere. Sarah became pregnant and had a son at the right time. In Genesis Chapter 18, God appeared as a Man to meet with Abraham. He came into the world to lift up those He called His own, even as they struggled to understand His promises. Then, God did exactly what He said He would do. It didn’t matter if His people understood or believed— that child was born on time, just as God promised. God performed a miracle from heaven while appearing as a Man to comfort His people on earth. Later, Sarah named her son Isaac, which means “he laughs” in Hebrew. Today, millions of Jews live all around the world and in Israel, showing that the joke is on those who think God is limited by time, space, or human ability and understanding.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for using Your power in spiritually fruitful ways for us. Knowing that You can do all things, we are grateful to see that You prefer to display Your power by including us on the favorable side of Your purposes. Forgive us for our unbelief. Help us to accept the encouragement You offer by trusting in who You are and what You have promised to do in Jesus’ name. Amen.
