…But now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith-- to God, alone wise, [be] glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen. - Romans 16:26-27
A common saying helps us understand God's unchanging greatness through the scriptures: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We don’t need to change things that are working just fine. This idea is shown in the scriptures, showing the value of God’s eternal purposes and promises. Times change, but the Bible doesn’t. That’s the unchanging greatness of the Word!
“By the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations…”
As the Apostle Paul concluded the Book of Romans, he wrote about the ongoing relevance of Scripture and the blessings God brings through it. God previously communicated through prophets, and for many people, the writings of these prophets were hard to understand. The difficulties people encounter in understanding God’s Word do not mean that God needs to change. There were many mysteries about God’s plans before Jesus’ incarnation. However, when Jesus came, He clarified these mysteries. His works opened spiritually blind eyes, helping people see the truth more clearly. His teachings unplugged spiritually deaf ears, allowing many to hear the Word clearly. This does not suggest that the prophetic Scriptures were flawed; it simply shows that God takes His time revealing the fullness of His plans.

“According to the commandment of the everlasting God…”
Therein lies the key. God is everlasting, so He takes His time to accomplish things. God's understanding is rooted in purposes that come from eternity. Just because people don’t live long enough to see God’s work finished doesn’t change the integrity of His work. The history of God’s work shows that the only thing that changes is the people God uses. He transforms His people into new creations, but His Word and purposes stay the same. God uses the same scriptures to develop a particular kind of faith that supernaturally leads to obedience to His commands. This is how God operated in Old Testament times when He used prophets. This is how He works now that Jesus has sent us His Spirit. We change; He doesn’t. Our motives shift; His don’t. Our works vary; His remain constant.
“Glory through Jesus Christ forever…”
God’s eternal nature sets Him apart from the elements that corrupt and weaken the rest of us. His plan centers on revealing Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Messiah of Israel, meant to save people from sin, death, and hell through faith in the testimony of His Word. The difference between the Old and New Testaments does not suggest a shift from God’s “Plan A” to “Plan B.” Instead, it highlights God’s consistent plan and His unchanging greatness in fulfilling it. Once again, if it ain’t broke…
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we are thankful to see that although many factors in life appear to change from our perspective, You remain the same. Forgive us when we doubt Your ability because circumstances seem to shift. Help us to remember that Your unchanging greatness ensures Your Word and promises remain true, regardless of how much time passes or how circumstances fluctuate. Guide us to serve You with faith that leads to obedience, glorifying Your eternal and spiritually centered purposes in Jesus’ name. Amen.
