Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him [be] glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. - Ephesians 3:20-21
Our prayer life can often serve as a valuable indicator of our spiritual well-being. Do our prayer requests focus on temporary concerns or eternal ones? Since God is eternal, His focus remains eternal. Do we seek God’s favor with this perspective? As Christians, we are often reminded that God can do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” We tend to assume and hope that God’s answers to our prayers will deeply impact us in the present through our life's circumstances. Is that what the Apostle Paul intended when the Spirit guided his hand to write the words of Ephesians 3:20-21?
“Now to Him who is able…”
One of the challenges we face as Christians when we pray is understanding what God is willing to do. We know what He can do, but often we are unsure if He will do the kinds of things we ask for. The key to praying with more confidence is understanding God’s eternal perspective. We need to know what “exceedingly abundantly” truly means from His eternal standpoint.

“Exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think…”
The scriptures clarify what God means by “exceedingly abundantly.” In Ephesians 3:16, the Bible states that God will grant the riches of His glory in a specific way. He will empower His people through His Spirit in the “inner man.” God provides strength to our souls through the indwelling of His Spirit, pointing us to His Word. What is this strength for? The Spirit will teach us about Jesus as “Christ,” signifying the work He completed as Israel’s Messiah—specifically His life, death, resurrection, ascension, and promise of His return. We need inner strength to endure the challenges of understanding the spiritual matters of God while inhabiting these mortal bodies in a fallen world! We need spiritual strength from God to maintain this faith.
“According to the power that works in us…”
The “exceedingly abundant” riches of God’s glory strengthen our souls. They establish and ground us in God's love, causing us to grow in the knowledge of His fullness, which surpasses understanding! We often pray about issues tied to temporary circumstances. However, God wants to answer our prayers in even greater ways by connecting Himself to us in ways beyond our comprehension. He desires to unite with us, shaping us to reflect the goodness of His fullness. He doesn’t want to perform temporary works that lack lasting impact. Instead, He aims to do work that ensures His blessings last forever, starting and ending with His work to glorify Himself. He glorifies Himself by deepening our understanding of who He truly is—as our heavenly Father and Savior of our souls. This has always been His purpose.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we thank You for the testimony of Your Word that reveals the truth of Your desires and purposes. Forgive us when the desires of our hearts fail to consider the eternal nature and scope of Your purposes. Help us remember that “exceedingly abundantly” means something specific to You. Guide us to value the eternal and spiritually centered aspects of Your promises more than the temporary factors of this life, and trust that the glory You reveal to us and in us is FAR greater than anything we can imagine. We ask these things in the name of Jesus according to His everlasting glory. Amen.
