And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. - Colossians 1:17
The concept of time is hard to understand from a human perspective. We say that “time flies” when it seems like life is moving faster. We claim that things “take forever” when we want events to happen sooner than they actually do. The truth is that time moves at a steady pace, but our perception is what changes. The existence of phrases that exaggerate our relationship with time shows how God uses time to reveal major differences between us and Him. Everything in life is controlled by time. Everything in this world has a start. When something begins at 0 seconds, it becomes linked to a clock that measures how long it exists. We all know these ideas, whether we think about them or not. This simple principle is one reason why God is so hard to understand. He is eternal. He doesn’t experience time the way we do.
“He is before all things…”
Colossians 1:17 teaches us this truth, explicitly referring to Jesus. The Bible states that Jesus is “before all things.” When the text says that Jesus is “before” all things, it means He existed before everything! The previous verse declares that Jesus is the One who created everything. He had to exist before all things in order to create them. God is beyond time because He existed before there were night and day cycles that govern time. God invented time. He is the One who declared a “day.” Our relationship to time shows that all things have a beginning. God does not. Jesus may have been born on a particular day in a specific year, but that wasn’t the start of His existence. He is the Word of God who existed with God and as God before all things. The miracle of His incarnation is intensified when we consider how God existed beyond time yet clothed Himself in a human body to operate within time simultaneously.

Jesus has no beginning; the scriptures testify to this truth. He has no end, and the resurrection proves it. No matter how much time passes, Jesus remains unaffected by time and its factors. The miracles Jesus performed show that He still exercises control over His creation, just as He did in the beginning when He made everything. He maintains authority over nature, angels, demons, and even life and death. He was incarnate in the right place and at the right time to fulfill all the prophecies as they were written, proving that the variables of life do not impact Him as they do us, regardless of how much time goes by. That’s greatness!
“In Him all things consist…”
We measure time with clocks, yet none of us can control it. The clock moves forward because Jesus is the power source that fuels time and allows everything to function within it. Everything exists because of Him. All things are held together by the One who exists beyond the factors we believe govern this life. Jesus governs all things without being influenced by anything. If we seek a change in “the times,” it is clear that only Jesus has the greatness to bring about that change.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for including us in the eternal scope of Your plans, established before time itself, to glorify Yourself. You are the only One who can fix the issues of our present time. You hold all things together. Help us handle the factors of life today, remembering that Your greatness surpasses our schedules. We pray these things in Jesus’ great and glorious name. Amen!
