The Triune God - The Incomprehensible Majesty of God - The LOVE of God

[And] declared [to be] the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. - Romans 1:4

God is One but exists in three distinct forms, benefiting those called to be His. He is “the Father,” referring to the determined purposes of God - the mind of God. He is “the Son,” referring to the physical manifestation of God’s purposes – Jesus Christ. He is “the Holy Spirit,” which describes how He connects Himself and the benefits of His work to us from within.

“Declared [to be] the Son of God…”

When the Apostle Paul began writing a letter to the church in Rome, he described truths about God. In Romans 1:4, Paul wrote that Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God.” The term “declared” means that God determined Jesus to be the Son of God. This reflects the mind of God, outlining boundaries and parameters for His purposes. God intended to take the form of flesh, defining how He would fulfill His eternally unconditional promises. He would become a man, fully equipped with every eternally self-existing and self-sustaining attribute to accomplish His eternal and spiritually centered purposes. Jesus Christ is the physical manifestation of God’s intention. Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.

Light shining through the empty tomb of Jesus Christ

“With power according to the Spirit of holiness…”

How do we know that’s true about Jesus? The Father’s purposes were previously documented in scripture through the prophets. In Romans 1:2, Paul wrote that God communicated His promises through the prophets in the Holy Scriptures He gave them by His Spirit. Those prophets were told that God would take the form of flesh as Israel’s Messiah King, a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. God informed the prophets that He would perform this miracle by being born of a virgin in the city of Bethlehem to perform miracles for undeserving people, publicly confirming His power as God in the flesh.

“By the resurrection from the dead…”

Moreover, Jesus was confirmed as God in the flesh through His resurrection. Who else can predict their death, the circumstances surrounding it, and their bodily resurrection, and then actually accomplish it? Notice how Paul described the involvement of the Holy Spirit in affirming Jesus’ identity. The Father taught about Jesus and how He would reveal His power as God in the flesh. The English phrase states that Jesus manifested that power “according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” The word “according” is a Greek preposition that indicates a downward direction. The phrase “by the” is another Greek preposition that signifies a place of origin and might be better translated as “out of.” In simpler terms, the power of Jesus descended from God’s Spirit of holiness out of His own resurrection. The language demonstrates that none of this was random or accidental. It was all part of a divine plan. It was executed with precision to perfection by God alone. This is the marvel of God’s identity, attributes, purposes, and promises. Who else can work like this?

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, we are grateful that You are able and willing to reveal Yourself to us and connect with us in ways that benefit us, without compromising Your integrity! It is amazing to learn about Your purposes, how You fulfill them, and how You connect with us so that we can gain from them. Help us remember the power of the resurrection and what that means for us today as we walk in Your Spirit, affirming the truth of who You are and what You want to do, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
