The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle [you]. To Him [be] the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. - 1 Peter 5:10-11

Reflect on how much time, energy, and resources we dedicate to achieving “glory” in this life. We pursue worldly comforts and goals based on temporary satisfaction, seeking approval from others according to cultural standards. We work hard to create a certain quality of life here and do everything possible to maintain it. Christians face this challenge as well. We become so attached to this life and this world that we forget we are citizens of heaven.

“The God of all grace, who called us…”

It shouldn’t be this way. God’s calling in our lives should lead us to cherish His ETERNAL glory above all else. If we truly understand the eternal nature of God’s glory, we won’t cling as tightly to this life and its possessions. Remembering the power and character of God’s calling helps us keep our focus in the right direction. God offers eternal glory in His presence, made possible through the power of His calling, revealed through the work of Jesus Christ.

“His eternal glory by Christ Jesus…”

Jesus entered the world as God in the flesh to fulfill the Father’s eternally unconditional promises centered on forgiving sins. Even though that work happened so long ago, it STILL serves as God’s “calling.” Jesus' past deeds still carry the power to reach the dead souls of sinners, revive those souls, and sanctify them into His righteousness, producing eternal life. The testimonies of God’s people have confirmed that truth from the beginning.

“After you have suffered a while…”

God demonstrated His greatness by creating the universe through the power of His Word. That same power was shown when the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, visibly displaying the glory of the Father. This power is still revealed as sinners are called out of darkness into His glorious light. When the Apostle Peter wrote these words, the church he addressed was facing significant persecution. Peter even noted the suffering the church experiences now as we undergo the changes orchestrated by God. Yet, did God’s church collapse? Were we erased from existence? Aren’t sinners still being saved?

“To Him [be] the glory and the dominion forever…”

The same calling yields the same powerful results and will continue forever as God’s people are fully conformed to His glory. What motivates believers to withstand the challenges of temptation, opposition, persecution, and personal failure while waiting for unseen promises? Remember the power of God’s calling through Jesus. Jesus lived, died, and rose again at a specific time, yet His work influences all believers—past, present, and future. That’s the eternally unchanging power of God’s Word. Does anything else in this life compare to that greatness?

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to a better life. Forgive us when we diminish the power of Your calling and its value. Help us see the world as it truly is. Establish, strengthen, and settle us in the knowledge of Your greatness so we don’t compare the wins and losses of this life to the glory of eternal life in Your presence. Perfect us in that understanding, and grant us the strength to endure the suffering associated with that perfection as we forsake this life like Jesus did. Amen.
