“And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all [manner of] workmanship…” - Exodus 31:3
The concept of the triune nature of God can be challenging to understand. God created us in the likeness of His nature to help us. Humans are made with a “3-in-1” nature, too. Each of us is, individually, one person. We all possess three components to our identity: physical, mental, and spiritual capacity. God’s triune nature is similar. The scriptures describe the Father in a way that reflects the mind of God. He devises plans according to His holy and perfect intentions. God’s purposes are physically fulfilled exclusively by “the Son.” Jesus is how the intentions of the Father are physically realized. The Holy Spirit is the “soul” of God. It's the glue that binds the body and mind together in a way that demonstrates a unique personality and attitude.
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God…”
Although we can relate to God in this way, He remains uniquely transcendent. For instance, when God works, He often does so through people. The scriptures illustrate that God can use individuals in various ways, bringing blessings or curses to those involved. In these instances, Jesus’ physical influence isn’t the direct cause. The Bible teaches that it is God’s Spirit that is. This characteristic sets God apart from the rest of us. None of us can use our souls the way God uses His Spirit!

“In wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge…”
The testimony of Exodus 31:3 documents God’s work to equip His people to build a place of worship. When God delivered Israel from Egypt, He commanded them to construct a tabernacle—a dwelling place for God’s presence among the people. Keep in mind, the people had just been freed from slavery. They weren’t trained craftsmen. Where did they learn to build and make the things God commanded them to build and make? God’s Spirit equipped them.
“In all [manner of] workmanship…”
When God told His people to build a tabernacle, He called upon inexperienced and unable individuals. The inexperience or ignorance of the people wasn’t a hindrance to God. He revealed His majesty by instilling His wisdom and ability within them. God filled them with His Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit is God, the people were filled with the attributes He desired to share, thereby equipping them for tasks they would have been incapable of completing otherwise. How does that work? Who knows? That’s why God had to be the one who empowered them. The people didn’t ask for this. They didn’t perform any rituals. God took it upon Himself to perform the miracle necessary to prepare the people according to His purposes. This is how God’s people learn to obey His commands. We all need God to perform a miracle, even to follow the simplest commands. Somehow, He miraculously fills us with His Spirit to accomplish things we’re otherwise unable to do, ultimately pointing to His majesty and glory.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we are grateful to know that You are willing and able to equip us for service. We confess that we can do nothing useful for You apart from You. We acknowledge that our righteousness is like filthy rags. Therefore, we are thankful that You are willing to perform a miracle by Your Holy Spirit. We ask that Your Spirit would come upon us today to prepare us for the simple tasks You have commanded us to do, starting with walking by faith. Fill us with Your Spirit so we can live today in the likeness of Your Son for Your glory. We understand that without Your Spirit, this is impossible. Therefore, we ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
