“For the LORD your God [is] God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” - Deuteronomy 10:17
Many individuals have been called “the GOAT” over the years—Greatest Of All Time. Think about the level of honor, respect, and praise we give these people. Still, the quality of "greatness" they show is often limited. Walter Payton is often seen as one of the greatest NFL running backs ever, having played for thirteen years. Michael Jackson came onto the scene at age six and produced hit after hit for forty-five years! Many argue that Simone Biles is one of the greatest female Olympians of all time, having excelled at three straight Olympic Games. Despite these amazing accomplishments, their "greatness" lasts only for a time. They didn’t start at their peak, nor do they stay there. Are they really as “great” as we think? While they may seem great compared to others in their fields, when we compare them to true greatness, they are less impressive.
“For the LORD your God [is] God of gods…”
In Deuteronomy Chapter 10, God reminds Israel of what He has done, making Him the true “GOAT.” He created the heavens, the earth, and everything in it. He delivered Israel from Egypt's bondage through incredible miracles, showing that human ideas are fake and worthless. He is the LORD, exalted in glory above everything as the One True Living God. He isn’t limited to a single "season” of greatness; He has always been great and always will be.

“And Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome…”
Walter Payton was a punishing runner, but could he punish nations for sin? Michael Jackson was called the "King of Pop." How great is a dead king? Simone Biles performs incredible feats that defy gravity. Can she ride the clouds like God? This is why God doesn’t play favorites. Who would impress God? God is the One who breathes life into everything. Who is greater, the one who uses power, or the One who gives power to use? Do we honor God as we do some people?
“Who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe…”
While Deuteronomy 10:17 reminds us of the eternally unchanging greatness and power of God, the passage also teaches us how we should respond to this knowledge about Him. The verse before it instructs us to eliminate the self-righteousness of our flesh that elevates human ability above God. Remember who God is, and humble yourself. Stop being stubborn about the truth of who He is, as if He’s less than what Scripture states and what He’s proven true of Himself. As the eternally unchanging God, He could display the full extent of His greatness against us in devastating ways because of our arrogance, indifference, and stubbornness. But He does not. Instead, He shows us mercy and patience. Turning from our pride to honor His greatness with humility is the least we can do to show our gratitude. Rather than showcasing His greatness harshly, the GOAT revealed Himself as “the Word” who became “the Lamb.”
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we confess that You are indeed the Greatest of All Time. You are the eternally unchanging God of gods and Lord of lords. You are not impressed with us, yet You show us great mercy, grace, and love. Help us to decrease so that You can increase in our lives as You rightly deserve. All glory, honor, and praise be to You for Your greatness in saving our souls from sin, death, and hell. Fill us with Your Spirit to equip us with gratitude in Jesus’ name and likeness. Amen.
