He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth His mercy and His truth. - Psalm 57:3
God is above all things as the Holy Creator of the universe. That doesn’t mean He is distant. God saw and understood the problems sin causes. He’s God; He could have addressed those issues from a distance, but He didn’t. In 1 John 4:8, the scriptures say that God is love. Even in our limited human experience, we know that true love requires an intimate connection. God proved He is love by coming into this world to help people far beneath Him. He came to forge the intimate connection we need to escape the flames of hell we deserve.
“He shall send from heaven…”
The words of Psalm 57 were written by King David long before he became king. At that time, he was being pursued by King Saul, who was consumed by jealousy toward David and sought to have him killed. David had to live in caves to hide from his enemies—his own people, whom he loved and served. The psalm begins with David’s cries to God for mercy. David called God “the God Most High who performs all things for me.” He understood that when he prayed to God seeking help, he could somehow communicate with the One who is supremely exalted over everything. That’s a miracle! David realized that when he prayed to God for help, God was willing to listen and could respond. That’s a miracle, too!

“He reproaches the one who would swallow me up…”
David’s testimony shows that God heard him and delivered him from Saul and every other threat he faced throughout his life. David died peacefully at an old age in his home, just as God promised. Although God was exalted in heaven, He listened to David and responded to the challenges in his life in real, practical, and tangible ways. God’s care and love for David were not like a long-distance relationship, despite God's position far above us all. How does God accomplish this?
“God shall send forth His mercy and His truth…”
God sees problems from heaven but responds in our world. David’s testimony is a prophetic picture of the greater love God showed when He took the form of flesh. God’s love is not expressed from the distance between heaven and earth. God dwelt among us as a man to save us from the enemy of all enemies – sin and its wages. God showed mercy. He didn’t treat humanity the way we deserved. The Most High God came from heaven to rescue us from sin, death, and hell. He performed all righteousness on our behalf to reproach the sin that would otherwise condemn us all. God truly sent forth His mercy and truth by placing His own feet on the ground we walk, being tempted in every way we are but abstaining from any form of sin. It doesn’t get more intimate than that! That’s the Biblical standard of LOVE.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we’re thankful for the testimony of scripture that provides significant historical evidence of Your involvement in the lives of Your people. We know You are in heaven. We’re grateful that You manifest Your mercy here through Your Son and Spirit to keep us from the judgment we deserve. We appreciate that the intimacy of Your love transcends the distance Your majesty creates, allowing You to lead us and dwell in us! Help us to remember this amazing benefit You’ve granted when dealing with those who try to hinder us from fulfilling Your purposes. You delivered David from far greater enemies. You’ve saved our souls from the greatest enemy of all. Thank You, Jesus! Amen.
