The Everlasting God - The Word of God - The Unchanging Greatness Of God
Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your loving kindnesses, for they [are] from of old. - Psalm 25:6

As believers in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, born again by the Holy Spirit, it’s important to remember that we cannot lose our salvation! You can’t be “unborn” again. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have doubts. As Christians, it’s common to feel that our failures might threaten our eternal security. Many wonder which sin will be the “last straw” for God, causing Him to condemn us to hell. We make so many mistakes. Which one is “THE one?”

“Remember…”

God doesn’t want His people to think this way. Easier said than done, though, right? How do we escape this mindset when our minds play tricks on us? Remember, God is eternal. He isn’t governed by or affected by time or the factors of time that cause change. Therefore, God is unchanging. He is the same today as He was “in the beginning." Contrary to what many people incorrectly state, there is no difference in God’s character or temperament from the Old Testament to the New Testament. He is the same today, tomorrow, and forever.

“Your tender mercies and Your loving kindnesses…”

This is the truth that David wrote about in Psalm 25:6. Scripture reveals how flawed he was, even though David is called “a man after God’s own heart.” David persevered faithfully by remembering God’s nature. He desired the LORD’s “tender mercies,” which describes a mother’s womb in the original language. David wanted God to nurture and protect him just as a mother’s womb nourishes and safeguards a growing baby. He recognized his need to grow and develop as God’s servant, depending on God to facilitate that maturation. David knew he had made many mistakes but did not want God to deal with him harshly; instead, he sought gentle compassion the way a loving mother would care for her developing baby. David sought God’s “loving kindness,” which is translated from Hebrew as “mercy” 149 times in the Bible! David needed God’s mercy. He didn’t want to be treated the way he deserved as a sinner.

“For they [are] from of old…”

Where did David find encouragement? David knew the Word, recognized how God treated His servants in the past, and understood that God and His Word do not change. If God was willing to show tender mercy and loving kindness to His servants before, that same favor is available to any other servant God calls at any time. David wasn’t asking God to do anything except what the Word reveals that God always does for His people. God can demonstrate His greatness through His eternally enduring mercy and patient nurturing. His ability to wait long periods for the effects of His work to unfold while dealing with our shortcomings is unmatched. This truth doesn’t give us a license to continue in sin. We need to repent. Still, we must remember that our mistakes don’t change God’s nature.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which teaches us the truth about Your attributes. Thank You for Your tender mercies and loving kindness. Thank You for reminding us that You don’t change. Forgive us for the times we have doubted You and Your faithfulness. Help us serve You with the same encouragement as Your past servants, knowing You will provide us with the same favor according to Your purposes, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
