The concept of the “fountain of life” has been a subject of folklore since its inception. However, the idea of everlasting life is not a myth or a tall tale. The fountain of life and the eternal quality of life it brings describe the promise of the eternally self-existing and self-sustaining God. Since God is unique in this way, He is the only One qualified to provide the type of life people have longed for. Psalm 36:9 says that the “fountain of life” is with God. The original grammar indicates that “the fountain of life” is of God. The fountain of life is the source of life, and God is the source of the fountain. 

“For with You [is] the fountain of life…”

The scriptures also teach that “the fountain of life” is the same as God’s essence as “light.” God is uniquely YAHWEH – the God of glory Who created all things in heaven and earth and uniquely connected Himself to the world through His covenants with the nation of Israel. 1 Timothy 6:16 teaches that God dwells in “unapproachable light” that no one can see. If the light of God’s glory is unapproachable, and the fountain of life is the byproduct of this light, then the fountain of life is also unapproachable.

“In Your light we see light…”

This is why only God’s glory can grant access to the fountain of life. Only the light of God’s glory can equip us to perceive God’s glory and obtain the eternal life He provides. We can’t achieve this access on our own. The Bible teaches that ONLY those who believe in Jesus Christ as the physical manifestation of God’s glory can drink from this fountain freely! The only way we can see the glory of God is through faith in the glory of Jesus Christ as God-in-flesh. That’s where we find access to God’s glory and the fountain of life that comes exclusively from Him.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, we are thankful to know the truth about life and that there is hope beyond the grave because of who You are and what You have done. We believe You are the one and only God of glory. We believe You took on flesh to give us access to Your glory and eternal life, which is otherwise inaccessible. Father, we ask You to direct our perspective today. Govern our attitudes with an eternal worldview so that whether we succeed or fail in what we need to do, we remember the bigger picture that You are painting. We ask that You fill us with Your Spirit so that those around us see the character and nature of Your Son in our place so they can receive the water of life that You freely give. We ask and pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of Your glory. Amen.
