Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he [was] the priest of God Most High. - Genesis 14:18
The Bible teaches that the LORD is “the God Most High.” As the Bible describes how highly exalted God is, it can feel like He is too far to reach. If He’s so highly exalted, how can we make contact? How can we know Him? How can we gain access to His benefits and blessings? The transcendent nature of God’s attributes presents a significant challenge for humanity.
“Then Melchizedek…”
The testimony in Genesis 14:18 demonstrates that God has always had a plan to address this disconnect. This recounts an encounter between Abraham and a man named Melchizedek. In Genesis Chapter 14, the scriptures reveal how God enabled Abraham to triumph over the region’s most powerful kings. Desiring to thank God, Abraham prepared an offering. Melchizedek was the man who connected Abraham to the Father in heaven. He was the king of a city called Salem, an ancient reference to the city of Jerusalem. The Hebrew word “Salem” is also derived from the Hebrew word “Shalom,” meaning peace. Melchizedek ruled over the city that God ultimately claimed as His dwelling place, the city of peace.

“Brought out bread and wine…”
The scriptures state that Melchizedek brought out bread and wine. This symbolizes the peace and fellowship between Him and Abraham. While Abraham sought to honor God with the possessions God provided, Melchizedek wanted to bless Abraham with his abundance further and share a meal with him. This is also the first time the scriptures refer to God as "El Elyon” or “the God Most High.” This testimony clearly expresses God’s supremely exalted nature. Abraham could connect with God only through Melchizedek, which is why He’s called “the priest of God Most High.” Priests serve as intercessors; they are appointed by God to connect His people to Himself through sacrifices and offerings. However, Melchizedek was recognized as a priest long before God established that role through Moses. He is also the only one in scripture who God appoints as a priest AND a king.
“He [was] the priest of God Most High…”
Thus, while the preeminence of God makes Him inaccessible to us, Melchizedek was the one God chose to connect Abraham to Himself through their fellowship, as Abraham sought to honor God. God is transcendent. He’s not unreachable. Even so, to approach God peacefully, we all need someone to stand between us and Him to connect us. Here, the Anointed One is referred to as Melchizedek. Later, He will be called Jesus! Different name. Same Guy. Same purposes. That’s what makes Him so good!
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for the goodness You’ve shown in connecting us to Yourself. We acknowledge that You are supremely exalted above all things. Therefore, we trust in Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, from the order of Melchizedek, our Great King, to grant us peace with You through our fellowship with Him. May our lives today be dedicated to thanking You for this great work through our speech, actions, and attitudes in Jesus’ name. Amen.
