“The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that [is] on the earth.” - Genesis 9:16
If God were to change, His promises would also be subject to change. That’s not good! It would make God just like us, undermining the integrity He claims in His Word. Fortunately, God has provided clear and tangible evidence that He does not change, regardless of how much time elapses. The same is true regarding God’s Word.
“The rainbow shall be in the cloud…”
In Genesis 9:16, God made essential declarations to confirm His trustworthiness. He established an “everlasting covenant” with all living creatures on earth. God cannot make such a promise unless He is eternal. The nature of God’s promise highlights His immortal attribute. But how do we know that God is eternal? He provided a sign to show His ability to keep everlasting promises – rainbows. We’ve all seen rainbows in the sky. Rainbows are not new; people around the world have observed them for thousands of years.

“I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant…”
The fact that rainbows are so common demonstrates God’s eternal and unchanging nature. He created the first rainbow during Noah's time after the flood, and has been the reason for rainbows ever since. We continue to see rainbows because God keeps showing them to prove He is faithful in keeping His promises. Since people first saw rainbows in the sky, the world has not experienced a global flood. That’s not a coincidence; that’s God’s integrity.
Still, the rainbow Noah saw in Genesis Chapter 9 wasn’t the first rainbow created by God. The Bible is full of accounts where witnesses saw God’s throne surrounded by a spectrum of light resembling a rainbow. The eternal glory of God’s throne is often described as shining like a rainbow, exalted above all in heaven. Not only does the rainbow confirm God’s faithfulness to His covenant, but it also displays His glory. The frequent appearances of rainbows show the unchanging nature of God’s glory as seen around His throne. We can even expect when rainbows might appear based on certain weather conditions. That’s how reliable God’s Word is. That’s how consistent God’s faithfulness remains. We don’t see rainbows change or disappear because God hasn’t altered His judgment. God hasn’t changed His mind because He is unchanging, no matter what factors or how much time passes.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we thank You for Your faithfulness in withholding Your judgment against the world by not flooding it as You did in the days of Noah. Thank You for Your patience and mercy. Thank You for the evidence of Your unchanging nature and the manifestation of Your faithful glory in the rainbows we enjoy seeing. We look forward to witnessing the glory of the rainbow that surrounds Your throne when You fulfill the promise You made concerning eternal life. We rejoice in that promise and in Your unwavering faithfulness to keep it, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
