For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. - Romans 1:16

There are many reasons why people want God to display His power. Some desire to see God’s power for blessings, others for healing and restoration, and some for revenge. God can demonstrate His power in all these ways. However, Romans 1:16 shows that God displays His power in various forms to achieve a single purpose. He reveals His power to save souls from sin, death, and hell in a specific way.

“It is the power of God…”

God uniquely reveals His power through His Word, described here as “the Gospel of Christ.” All of God’s power is expressed through “the Gospel,” meaning “Good News.” God’s power delivers a message that brings good news, belonging to Christ. This indicates that God’s power is shown through the good news that His Messiah fulfills. Remember, God’s power is displayed through the Holy One of Israel, the right hand of God—Jesus of Nazareth. He is the One whom the Father appointed to fulfill all His eternally unconditional promises to Israel and the world. He is the only way sinners receive forgiveness, are spiritually reborn, cleansed, and transformed into His righteousness with eternal life.

“To salvation…”

The power of God is revealed in the Word He proclaimed, where He chose to save sinners from His upcoming judgments by judging sin through His atoning sacrifice. This power is clear in His Word because God manifested His ability to transform the Word into human form to save souls from condemnation. God's power is present in this message because, despite the complexities and variables of life, He has never failed to fulfill every detail of every promise ever made. The power of God is shown in this message because the good news is that we don’t need to earn any merits to benefit from His work. Salvation is offered to those who believe in the testimony of God’s power, not to those who struggle to measure up to it.

“For everyone who believes…”

Is there a message that surpasses the Gospel in goodness? Is there another message that makes us aware of our condemned spiritual state while also offering the solution to this impossible problem? Is there another message that requires us only to believe in its truth to benefit from it? Is there another message that speaks of the Almighty God becoming a man to pay the wages of our sin, allowing us to have eternal life in His glorious kingdom? Is there better news than this? No wonder the Apostle Paul was unashamed of this message, even though proclaiming it brought great danger to his life. It is truly the power of God!

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Good News! Despite our sinful condition, You chose to provide a solution that exceeds our ability. While we trust that You will demonstrate Your power to judge sinners, we are grateful to know the Truth and that You also show Your power to save sinners from that judgment. Forgive us for the times we’ve felt shame, fear, or unbelief regarding this message and Your power within it. Help us to live like Paul, boldly proclaiming this message, trusting in the strength behind it, with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
