“Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.” - Acts 2:33
The Day of Pentecost in Acts Chapter 2 was wild! It must have been quite a spectacle to witness people from one culture suddenly understanding and speaking foreign languages and dialects. It’s difficult to imagine such a scenario. Still, that’s what the Bible describes. How did it occur?
“Being exalted to the right hand of God…”
The testimony begins by teaching that this miracle centered on the work and movement of Jesus Christ and was carried out through the new work of the Holy Spirit. In John 16:7, Jesus explained that the Holy Spirit would not be sent until He returned to heaven. Fifty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven before eyewitnesses. Acts Chapter 2 testifies that Jesus was seen being exalted to the right hand of God the Father. Shortly thereafter, the Holy Spirit powerfully came into the world, filling the disciples of Jesus with supernatural power and ability that validated His words and promises.

“Having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit…”
This miracle was the birth of the church. God took on human form to pay the full penalty for sin, which had kept the people of God disconnected from an intimate relationship with Him through the Spirit. Once Jesus settled that debt through His crucifixion, He rose from the dead and ascended to heaven to continue His work. The Holy Spirit began working within the hearts of Jesus’ true followers. They were born again. The Holy Spirit spiritually regenerated those individuals. The miracle that occurred was a public display of proof! How else could that happen unless God worked through them from within, just like Jesus promised?
“He poured out this which you now see and hear…”
Jesus physically ascended to heaven to provide access to the Holy Spirit. Why? The scriptures show that God desires to change the hearts and minds of His people, equipping them to speak about the wonderful works He promised to accomplish. God seeks to fill His people with His essence to perform miracles. What’s the miracle? He calls sinners, once governed by hidden desires, to rebel against Him. That calling provokes repentance and faith, where the heart is born again with a new perspective and purpose, according to His own perspective and purpose. Once made new, the servants of God witness His work, testify, and proclaim it to others for His glory. God provides His Spirit to equip us with the supernatural ability needed to die to self for the spiritual benefit of others, where our public testimony of God’s Word becomes our primary pursuit in life. That’s how God loved. He gives His Spirit to display that same love through us.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit. While it would be better to see You face to face, we trust that the presence and indwelling of Your Spirit are sufficient for everything we need. Fill us fresh with Your Spirit to equip us for the work of Your service to make Your name known for Your glory. Teach us to value that miracle above all else, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
