Then [comes] the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. - 1 Corinthians 15:24

God can demonstrate His power in many ways. The entirety of scripture reveals that God ultimately shows Himself as “The LORD God Almighty” to save souls from sin, death, and hell. To do this, God must judge the wicked and then give eternal life to those He saves. This is the ultimate display of His power. In 1 Corinthians 15:24, the Apostle Paul explains that Jesus will eventually end all rule, authority, and power to showcase this power. When will He do this? 1 Corinthians Chapter 15 clarifies that there are three main phases of God’s work, marked by key milestones culminating in Jesus reigning over the world from Jerusalem. The first milestone was Jesus’ resurrection. Is there a better way to show the supremacy of power than by defeating death itself from your own grave?!

“Then [comes] the end…”

The scriptures explain that Jesus’ resurrection was the “firstfruits” of the second phase of God’s work. His resurrection served as a prototype for the resurrection of all believers throughout human history! Since He was bodily raised from the dead in glory, all true believers will also be bodily raised in glory. According to the promise of Daniel 12:13, this includes all Old Testament believers. This event also involves granting new, glorified bodies to church-age believers and martyrs who die during the Great Tribulation. Jesus will give eternal life with unchanging, glorified functions to all these believers through the distribution of new bodies, all at once! This event marks the first half of an era known as “The First Resurrection” as described in Revelation 20:5-6.

“When He delivers the kingdom to God the Father…”

This will happen immediately after Jesus’ second coming. According to Isaiah Chapter 63, Jesus will return to Bozrah, in modern-day Jordan, to defeat the enemies of His people who try to take His authority. Revelation Chapter 19 shows that He comes back with His church and then goes to the Valley of Megiddo, where He destroys the anti-Christ, the false prophet, and the worldly army that tries to fight Him. Jesus will speak, and they will die instantly. Jesus will march back to the Mount of Olives, restoring the land and His people. He will build His temple and set up His kingdom. At that time, Jesus will judge Israel, the nations, and rule the world Himself from Jerusalem to fulfill all of the Father’s eternally unconditional promises to Israel and the world, completing His role as the Lion from the tribe of Judah.

“When He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power…”

This is why Paul wrote about Jesus delivering the kingdom to God the Father as the final stage of God’s work. When Jesus returns, showcasing the power of His resurrection and His ability to bodily raise all His people from every point in human history, NO ONE will oppose Him for 1,000 years, thoroughly proving the supremacy of His power. Jesus’ reign on earth during this time coincides with the Father receiving His kingdom because Jesus is God! His authority to judge, raise the dead, and rule justly to establish global peace will clearly demonstrate that truth.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for revealing how You will display the glory of Your power and when those events will happen. While we need Your power now to walk in the Spirit instead of the flesh, help us also to anticipate the time when Your kingdom comes to earth as it is in heaven. We ask these things in Jesus’ name, our LORD and KING. Amen!
