The Most High God - God's Goodness - God's Preeminence & Transcendence - Melchizedek
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth… - Philippians 2:9-10

The Bible clearly teaches that God is supremely exalted above all things. As the Creator, He’s in charge. It’s difficult for people to understand how Jesus has the same level of authority. Even though many saw Jesus perform miracles that only God can do, it was hard for their human minds to grasp how a man could also be God. People face the same challenge today, especially since we can’t see Jesus do the things He did in person like His disciples did. So, what do we have to build our faith on to trust that Jesus is transcendent as the supremely exalted God of glory?

“Therefore, God also has highly exalted Him…”

In Philippians 2:9-10, the Apostle Paul draws from the Old Testament scriptures to emphasize Jesus’ supreme glory, authority, and power. The passage in Philippians 2:9-10 is a quotation from Isaiah 45:23. However, it’s important to consider the context of that verse. Isaiah 45:22-24 states:

“Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I [am] God, and [there is] no other. I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth [in] righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. He shall say, 'Surely in the LORD I have righteousness and strength. To Him [men] shall come, and all shall be ashamed who are incensed against Him.’”

The prophet Isaiah documented God’s words when He proclaimed that He is the ONLY God and Savior. Every knee will bow to Him, and every tongue will confess His glory when facing Him in judgment. Yet, Paul connected that prophecy to Jesus. Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise in Isaiah 45. God has exalted Jesus, which means that He is lifted ABOVE the highest position! He is the One True Living God!

“And given Him the name which is above every name…”

When the text refers to Jesus’ name, it refers to His identity, character, and attributes. Jesus’ name means “God is salvation.” It was said that His name would be “Immanuel,” which means “God With Us.” This was also a prophecy of Isaiah. When God spoke through Isaiah, declaring that He is the only God and Savior, Jesus’ testimony supported that point. His name is supremely exalted above all because it teaches that He is God in the flesh, who came into the world to offer salvation from sin, death, and hell.

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow…”

This is why every knee will bow in subjection to Jesus. He is God, supremely exalted in glory, authority, and wisdom. He is the Judge of the righteous and the wicked as the Creator of all things. When Jesus came into the world, He proved that angels and demons are subject to Him. Jesus' ascension to the Father proved His transcendence. He called souls out of Hades to raise the dead, preached judgment to the wicked in Hades while in the grave and will judge every non-believer at His Great White Throne. Jesus’ nature and testimony are indeed difficult to understand. However, that does not negate its truth. One day soon, the whole world will know who Jesus is, and no one will be able to dispute His greatness!

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the true nature of Your transcendence and goodness to save us from sin, death, and hell. Help us submit to Your authority, wisdom, and eternally centered purposes for Your glory, as that is how everything will ultimately resolve. Help us to humble ourselves in Jesus’ name. Amen.
