For [there is] one God and one Mediator between God and men, [the] Man Christ Jesus… - 1 Timothy 2:5
If only a few people in human history have been to the moon, how can anyone approach God, who transcends the entire universe? We need someone to bring us to Him. That person must have free access between heaven and earth, able to reach from there to here to bridge the physical and spiritual gap that keeps us separated from the Father’s goodness. Who but God can reach this far? He must do the work required to connect us to Himself. Human efforts don’t close the distance, which is why we all fall short of His glory. Thankfully, we have the Man, Jesus Christ.
“For there is one God…”
The testimony of Isaiah, Chapter 45, documents God’s own words, in which He proclaims that there is only one God and Savior. There is YAHWEH and only YAHWEH. Here, the Apostle Paul agrees. There is one God. No one else can send a corrupted human soul into the presence of the Father with His approval. The power, influence, and authority of this life are insufficient. No one else can elevate mortal beings into the blessings of His holy and immortal presence. No one can contend with God regarding the standards of righteousness that allow anyone to enter His kingdom. There is YAHWEH. There is no other.

“And one Mediator between God and men…”
Since there is only one God, there can only be one Mediator. No one else measures up to God’s holiness. No one fulfills His standards of righteousness. No one can reach Him! He is the only One who can stand between Himself and the corruption of humanity to intercede, making peace where there should be hostility. God must be both able and willing to represent Himself, reconciling and restoring fellowship. He must be able and willing to fill the gap that sin creates. He must be able and willing to confront death on behalf of those who are completely powerless, granting His quality of life despite the current condition of our souls. Who else can do these things except God?
“The Man Christ Jesus…”
There is only one Man who was conceived by the Holy Spirit. There is only one Man who was tempted in every way as we are, yet remained sinless. There is only one Man who expressed the heart of the Father fully and perfectly, living righteously and holy, yet dying for the sins and faults of others to save them from sin, death, and hell. There is only one Man who raised Himself from the dead. There is only one Man who publicly ascended to the right hand of the Father, exalting Himself to heaven according to His own will and righteousness. Clearly, “the Man Christ Jesus” is able! By placing the title “Christ” before the name Jesus here, the text emphasizes all the Messianic promises of the Father that Jesus fulfilled to prove and validate that He's the only One who can bridge the gap between heaven and earth, allowing sinners to be forgiven, cleansed, and saved from sin, death, and hell, so they can stand peacefully in the holy presence of the Father. There is only one God. There is only one Man who is God.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for our Mediator! Thank You for the mercy and grace You show in fulfilling righteousness on our behalf, paying the wages of our sin to cleanse our corrupted souls. You alone are exalted above all, and yet deem it good to exercise Your transcendence for our benefit. You alone are worthy of our worship and praise. Help us to die to “self” and to lay down the sin that You died to forgive so that we can serve You in gratitude, peace, and joy for Your glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
