But God has revealed [them] to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. - 1 Corinthians 2:10
When God described His attributes as the Messiah in Isaiah 9:6, He began with the title “Wonderful,” meaning “difficult to understand.” How can we comprehend who God is, what He’s all about, and how He operates if He describes Himself this way? How can we know God’s true purposes and promises if His thoughts oppose our understanding? The Bible teaches that the natural human tendency is to reject the truth of God rather than to seek Him. How can these issues be resolved?
“But God has revealed [them] to us through His Spirit…”
The testimony of 1 Corinthians 2:10 states that the Holy Spirit dwells in the hearts of believers, connecting us with God and teaching us about Him. God reveals the truth of Himself to us through His Spirit. This means that the truth of God flows exclusively through the conduit of the Holy Spirit. If we want to understand the truth about God’s blessings and judgments, heaven and hell, right and wrong, we need the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

“For the Spirit searches all things…”
Why do we need the Spirit? The Holy Spirit “searches all things.” This starkly contrasts with people. In 1 Corinthians 2:9, we learn about many things humans don’t know about God. Romans 3:11 states that no one understands God and that our natural desires keep us from seeking to know Him. This is one way the human race opposes God. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and here we see that the Holy Spirit is perfectly and constantly unified with the Father as the third part of God’s triune identity. The Spirit “searches all things” about God, His purpose, and His promises. He actively investigates the attributes and intentions of God. The Spirit is constantly engaged and updated about everything concerning God, even the deep, mysterious aspects of Him. The Spirit knows everything about God because He is God.
“The deep things of God…”
2 Timothy 3:16 teaches that the Holy Spirit is the true Author of scripture. When we combine that truth with the truth of 1 Corinthians 2:10, we can see how the Spirit teaches us about God. The Spirit guides us to understand the TRUE meaning of His Word. Many people are unaware of the truth about God because they fail to consult the source of wisdom that God has provided. Who is better qualified to teach us about God than God Himself? If we want to know all there is to know about God, even the difficult and extreme aspects, we need the indwelling of His Spirit, which only comes when we are born again through faith in the testimony of Jesus Christ. When we turn from our sin to seek knowledge of God through the testimony of Jesus in the Bible, the Holy Spirit inhabits our souls, creating a supernatural connection that fosters a relationship where we learn about God from God! Is there a better place to receive God’s communication and instruction than from within our own souls?
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for providing a way to know You where it would otherwise be impossible. We admit that our natural desires often don’t include seeking Your truth. Forgive us for our carnal focus and rebellious attitudes. Help us learn what is right in Your eyes through the tools You’ve provided – Your Spirit and Your Word. Direct our attention to Your instruction and keep us from the temptation to look elsewhere for truth. We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
