"Judah [is] a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; and as a lion, who shall rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him [shall be] the obedience of the people.” - Genesis 49:9-10
No one disputes the power of a lion. It is well known that lions can easily lift twice their body weight with their jaws. Their bite force has been recorded to range from 650 to 1,000 PSI. Such force can kill large animals like zebras and wildebeests with a single bite! Even a lion's roar can paralyze people with fear. There’s a reason lions are often called the “kings of the jungle.”
"Judah [is] a lion's whelp..."
This explains why God likened Himself to a lion. Genesis 49:9-10 is a key prophecy where God describes the qualities of Israel’s Messiah—the Savior of the world. He starts by saying the Messiah will come from Israel’s tribe of Judah, Jacob’s fourth-born son, whose name means “Praise.” The Messiah will be born as a human but will have the power, strength, and authority of a lion. Though a man, no one will be able to challenge Him, just as no human can challenge a lion.

“The scepter shall not depart from Judah..."
The prophecy states that the scepter will not depart from the tribe of Judah. Remember that God promised Abraham that one of his descendants would bring blessings to “all the families of the earth.” The covenant God made with Abraham was reaffirmed with Isaac and, later, with his son Jacob. Here, we see that God chose Judah from Jacob’s twelve sons to fulfill His covenant with Abraham. The descendants of Judah would hold great authority throughout history because of the One whom God would raise up from this tribe. God would use the tribe of Judah to raise up governors and kings (lawgivers) until the coming of “Shiloh.”
“Until Shiloh comes..."
The name “Shiloh” translates to “He whose right it is” in Hebrew. The Messiah would be the One who possesses authority and power above all others. He is the One who exclusively holds the right to exercise and administer the power of God Himself. He would be the One who embodies God's righteousness to facilitate the obedience of His people. The Messiah has the power to save the world from unrighteousness by spreading the transcendent nature of His own righteousness throughout the entire world, enabling God's true people to obey Him, where otherwise it would be impossible! This “Lion” is the KING of kings, with the power to judge and carry out God’s righteousness as a Man.
This prophecy presents Jesus Christ as God in the flesh, showing that God's ultimate power and authority have existed beyond time and space since the beginning. Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and ascension serve as clear proof of God’s unchanging power since the start. This prophecy reveals God’s plan to display His power and the reason behind it.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the true scope and nature of Your power. While Your power can be terrifying, Your Word and Jesus’ fulfillment of it show that You prefer to save souls rather than destroy them. Help us to submit to You and focus on the spiritual strength of Your power, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
