I will cry out to God Most High, to God who performs [all things] for me. - Psalm 57:2
There are often times in life when circumstances seem overwhelming. As the natural course of difficulty unfolds, our attitudes during that struggle will ultimately be shaped by where we place our trust. If we trust in ourselves, life’s challenges can be burdensome, leading us to live with fear, hopelessness, and emptiness. If our hope is in the LORD, our attitude is completely different, without requiring us to be fake or to exhaust ourselves with insincerity. Our understanding of God fuels our faith, which produces genuine hope and peace. The Biblical testimony of King David supports this truth.
“I will cry out to God Most High…”
David faced numerous challenges, and the scriptures illustrate that when circumstances seemed overwhelming, he recalled God’s nature, character, and integrity. David understood who God was through his grasp of God’s revelation in His Word. The testimony of God in the Hebrew scriptures provided enough insight for David to comprehend God’s transcendence. Thus, David recognized that God was supremely exalted above all things. This is why David wrote that he would cry out to “the God Most High” in his time of desperate need. God is transcendent above all things in heaven and earth, including our circumstances. David understood that, although he might have faced difficulties, God was above it all, untouched and unfazed. If we wish to be delivered from trials, we need someone who exists beyond those trials, able to maneuver with us while remaining unaffected by the issues that trouble us. That’s the God Most High!

“God who performs [all things]…”
David wrote that God “performs” all things. This means that God does all the work to bring things to an end and to completion. God has a plan for every human being. He’s the One who will see it through to the end. Verse 3 of Psalm 57 says that God helps His people by “sending from heaven.” This confirms God's supremely exalted position. Since God is above everything in heaven and earth, no one can interrupt the flow of His work or hinder the outcome of His purposes. His exalted position places Him in supreme control, so when He sends help to His people, it’s the greatest kind of help there is, straight from heaven!
God is the One who provides life and purpose, and since He does so from heaven, He can ensure a proper outcome for all things according to His holy and righteous purposes. This means that God can save His people from ANYTHING that threatens His purpose for them. God swore that David would be the king of Israel, establish the throne of the Messiah in Jerusalem, and die peacefully as an old man once that task was completed. It didn’t matter if Saul, the Philistines, or the gates of hell were against David; God was going to complete everything He purposed for David’s life, which He did, proving He is exalted above it all to preserve His people, ensuring the perfect completion of all the work He assigns to His servants.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for the encouragement we find in Your Word that reminds us of who You are. Although we may face troubles in this life, they do not affect You. You are supremely exalted above all things, yet we access Your goodness as You mercifully reach down to equip us for Your holy purposes. Help us to trust You as David did, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
