“The eternal God [is your] refuge, and underneath [are] the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, and will say, ‘Destroy!’” - Deuteronomy 33:27
Many people make promises with good intentions but struggle to keep them. Sometimes, these promises are made presumptively. We often overlook the various factors involved when making promises. Many individuals face interruptions or distractions. Unforeseen circumstances can also interfere with the time and energy needed to fulfill our commitments. Numerous challenges in life work against us, many of which are beyond our control. Even with the best intentions, following through on promises and commitments can be difficult. God does not face this issue. His eternal nature makes Him immune to it. God is not bound by life’s factors, such as time. He truly possesses all the time in the world. As time passes, we grow old, weary, and weak, and often lose interest. Time does not impact God in that way. His eternally unchanging nature grants Him a greatness that transcends our understanding.
“The eternal God [is your] refuge…”
This is why God’s promises are especially valuable. When you understand this, consider the promises God made in Deuteronomy 33:27. God described Himself as the “refuge” of His people, reminding them that He is eternal. This shows that God is like a “home” for His children. His people always have a safe, secure, restful, comforting, and encouraging place to go. For many, “home” isn’t as pleasant. It may lack stability. God is different from us. He is eternally great, allowing us to seek Him as our refuge for all the benefits a true “home” should provide. God has always been accessible and will continue to be. The same quality of refuge God offered in the past is available to His people today. For example, God was a refuge to Israel, protecting them in the wilderness and keeping them safe from the threats that could harm their relationship with His promises. Today, God offers us that same power and protection!

“Underneath [are] the everlasting arms…”
Why can we trust our lives to God? The arms He extends to His people are everlasting. They were large enough to position the stars when He created the universe. His arms were strong enough to create and uphold nations. His Right Hand alone was made manifest in Jesus Christ, who conquered death! Who else has arms like that? Do we believe His arms are big enough to reach us? Do we believe God’s arms still possess the strength we see in Scripture? Do we believe God is willing to protect us from sin, death, hell, and any other threat to our relationship with His eternal promises? When God said, “Destroy!” in the past, world empires were dismantled. Do we trust God’s Word when He declares He’s eternally unchanging? If so, we can be confident that God has all the integrity to fulfill every promise He made, in His time, according to His standards of righteousness and goodness. Who but God can make promises to safeguard and secure us in this way?
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, we recognize how Your Word affirms Your integrity. Help our unbelief. You are our refuge. Remind us of this when life becomes difficult. Help us remember that You have already overcome the eternal consequences of sin, death, and hell on our behalf. You will certainly protect us from anything else that tries to separate us from You. Let us be uplifted by this truth today in Jesus’ name – the One who defeated the enemy of our souls and continues to shield us. Amen.
