“I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose [of Yours] can be withheld from You.” - Job 42:2

Unfortunately, many misconceptions about God’s omnipotence exist. Often, we pray to the Almighty God, asking for His power for purposes that are outside the scope of His will. As a result, when God doesn’t respond as we expect, we may feel that His power is limited. The truth is, God can do all things. However, He will only act in ways that align with His eternally unconditional purposes and promises.

“I know that You can do everything…”

Job's testimony shows that God can do “everything.” The original Hebrew word for “everything” also means something that is whole and complete. Its verb form in scripture is often translated as “perfected” or “made perfect,” meaning the completion of a specific task. Yes, God can do “everything.” But the bigger point is that God will do all the work needed to make things perfect, whole, and complete, no matter how difficult that work may seem.

“No purpose [of Yours] can be withheld…”

This principle teaches that God shows His power to accomplish the tasks needed to fulfill specific purposes. God does everything required to realize His plans, even when the work seems impossible. Therefore, God will demonstrate His power ONLY in ways that support His purposes, which are documented in scripture. God reveals His power to ensure that what He has declared comes true. He will not display power in ways that contradict His Word.

How extensive is God’s power when it comes to His Word? Job made this statement in response to God’s rebuke that lasted for two full chapters—fifty-eight consecutive verses! In these verses, God reminded Job of His power to create everything from nothing. He emphasized His ability to control and assign roles to everything in heaven and earth. God also provided specific examples, mentioning fearsome creatures like Behemoth and Leviathan. These creatures were well known during Job's time and resembled giant dinosaurs. Indeed, God’s power is vast enough to create and control such beings. Nothing is difficult for God; nothing is beyond His ability. However, God does not use His power in vain.

The key to benefiting from God’s power is understanding His purposes. The Bible says that God will not withhold power to fulfill His plans. If we want to see God's power manifest in our lives, we need to ensure that our lives are aligned with His purposes as revealed in His Word. If our desires conflict with God’s purposes, we won’t experience His power as we hope. But if our hearts are in harmony with God’s eternal and spiritual purposes, He promises to exercise all the power needed to make us whole, complete, and perfect in Him!

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for making Your promises clear. We know You can do anything. Forgive us for expecting You to use Your power for our corrupt and selfish purposes. Help align our hearts with the eternal and spiritually focused purposes You’ve declared in Your Word, in the likeness of Jesus Himself. Amen.
