The Most High God - God's Goodness - God's Preeminence & Transcendence - Melchizedek
That they may know that You, whose name alone [is] the LORD, [are] the Most High over all the earth. - Psalm 83:18

The Bible clearly teaches that the LORD – YAHWEH ELOHIM – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, is the Creator, Controller, and Ruler of ALL things in heaven and on earth. However, most people do not agree with this. When sin first entered the world, it was manifested by humanity's attempt to redefine God’s standards of right and wrong. As sin continues to plague this world, we see that same self-righteousness reappear in various forms. People hate that God is in charge and in control, and many spend their lives trying to remove His authority from their lives. That doesn’t imply anyone ever succeeds.

The testimony of Psalm 83 is one of the most profound examples of this truth. Psalm 83 is a prophecy that speaks of nations conspiring together to oppose God by fighting against His people. This prophecy is unique and profound because it was fulfilled only one generation ago! The recency of God’s work in fulfilling this prophecy shows that His authority hasn’t diminished over time. He remains the Most High over all the earth, demonstrating this in a stunning fashion not long ago.

“That they may know that You…”

When examining Psalm 83:18, it’s important to pay attention to the pronoun. The text says, “That THEY may know that You…”

Who is “they” in this context? To whom will God uniquely reveal Himself? The context of Psalm 83 discusses a conflict and conspiracy against the nation of Israel. Verse 5 refers to a “confederation” formed against God Himself as they attempt to ensure that “the name of Israel” is never remembered again. Verses 6-8 list ten nations that surround Israel: modern-day Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. These are the enemies of Israel that detest God. God performed a great miracle to ensure that these nations recognize His transcendence above everyone.

“[Are] the Most High over all the earth…”

The nations mentioned in Psalm 83 attempted to unite against God’s people in an effort to prevent the recognition of Israel as a nation after May 14, 1948, when Israel was declared a sovereign state. No one stood with Israel at that time. It was that small nation against ten powerful nations fighting for its name and existence. Today, Israel remains a sovereign nation. Its name hasn’t been removed from history or forgotten, demonstrating that God is supremely exalted over the unified efforts of the world to erase His people.

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing works You have done to fulfill Your Word and for the opportunities You’ve given us to witness Your miracles recently. We see the world's desire to destroy Your people, yet You have proven Your transcendent authority and power by protecting and preserving them according to Your covenants. Help us to be encouraged by this profound evidence of Your goodness so we may boldly proclaim Your glory in Jesus’ name so that everyone will know who You are. Amen!
