The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne [is] established from of old; You [are] from everlasting. - Psalm 93:1-2
Throughout history, people have achieved remarkable things. Reflecting on the rapid progress of technology is just one part of extraordinary human accomplishments. However, this kind of “progress” has led many to believe that humanity is god-like. How we view human achievements often makes us think we can do anything we set our minds to. That's why the scriptures often remind us of who God truly is, setting Him apart from us to humble us and inspire our praises to Him.
“The LORD reigns…”
People believe humans govern and rule over life, but the Bible teaches that the LORD reigns. The original Hebrew word used to describe God’s authority also refers to the power of a king. This is why God is called the KING of kings. How do we know this is true? What sets God apart from other kings and rulers? God is the only one “clothed with majesty.” The term used to describe God’s majesty also describes how smoke rises in the air. In other words, everything God does is inherently exalted. God’s work elevates itself above all else. While people build things that decay and break down over time, God’s works do not. This is why Psalm 93:2 tells us that God’s throne is “established from old” and that He is “everlasting.” God’s work is eternal in nature. We cannot measure the value of His work by human standards because it transcends time, continually increasing in worth and forever exalting His glory. What king or authority figure can claim such a distinction regarding themselves or their works?

“The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength…”
God has also “girded Himself with strength.” Earthly kings and rulers rely on worldly resources to establish their strength and authority, but God depends on nothing but His Word. He possessed all strength, power, and authority before He created the heavens and the earth. This truth sets God apart from everything else; He existed before all things. The world was established before humans existed, and it continues to operate, enabling human life. The Eternal God is behind it all, and His Word is the fuel. The outward display of His majesty can be seen in the daily operations of our universe, which constantly supports life. The planet does not depend on earthly kings and rulers; life is made possible by God and God alone.
“Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved…”
With all the “accomplishments” people have achieved throughout human history, has anyone been able to undo a single thing God has done? Can people move the sun, moon, or stars? Can people change the function of Earth? Can we reorder God’s creation to satisfy our personal wishes and ambitions? Everything remains as it has been because no one can alter the things God established by the power of His Word. No one will ever match God, so all praise and honor should go to Him, no matter how much we believe we’ve accomplished.
Prayer for today
Our heavenly Father, thank You for the constant reminders of Your majesty and unchanging authority. Forgive us for thinking too highly of ourselves. Help us to live humbly, serving the purpose of Your plans, which You established before the worlds were formed, for Your glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
