The Most High God - God's Goodness - God's Preeminence & Transcendence - Melchizedek
For You, LORD, [are] most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods. - Psalm 97:9

There are many things in which people place their trust. Individuals hope that their personal ambitions and worldview will be enough to satisfy us in life, ultimately pleasing God so that we can reach heaven in the end. Many people subscribe to the idea that if we do our best, God will be pleased with us and we’ll end up in heaven. However, that is not what the Bible teaches. God never approved of this notion. God is greater than our worldview and personal philosophies. Our opinions are not worthy of consideration next to the truth of who God really is. When we live according to our personal standards rather than God’s standards found in His Word, scripture explains that this is akin to worshiping a false god. In this case, we make ourselves the god. This is a problem that requires immediate repentance!

“For You, LORD…”

The testimony of Psalm 97 explains why this way of thinking and living is so foolish. Verse 9 begins by referring to the LORD. Who is the LORD in this context? He is the One who rules the Earth. He establishes righteousness and justice. He is the One True Just Judge, the Creator and Controller of all things on Earth, so that every element on this planet is subject to Him in every way. The universe displays God’s glory and righteousness, and deep down, all people know it’s true.

“You are exalted…”

This is in direct contrast to the false gods and idols conceived by human creativity and crafted by human hands. They hold no function, ability, or power. Unlike idols, God is supremely exalted above all things. False gods and idols are made from materials of this world, which are ultimately corrupt and decay over time. God is above the earth and does not suffer from the effects of corruption or decay. He is the eternally self-existing and self-sustaining Creator of all things in heaven and earth. Nothing exists apart from God, which means that He transcends all things! If it weren’t for God, there would be no materials to make idols, nor sinful people who devise ways to worship “self.”

“Far above all gods…”

God is exalted “far” above all gods. The word “far” describes something immense, abundant, or great in force and might. Notice how the terms that depict how far above God is all suggest function. The God of the Bible is set apart from all other gods in tangible, verifiable ways. God exceeds false gods. He is abundantly great in force and might. False gods have no function. They are made of corrupt material by hands that ultimately weaken, perish, and return to the dust of the earth. Despite our sinful nature, God exercises His transcendence to provide life, purpose, righteousness, and gladness to those who rejoice in Him rather than worshiping “self.” That’s what makes Him so good!

Prayer for today

Our heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word. Forgive us for our various attempts to worship and exalt ourselves to Your position or even higher. Help us to remember the truth of Your Word. You are supremely exalted above all things, as well as the false ideologies of this life that seek to glorify humanity. You alone are good, and we look to You for life, ability, righteousness, and joy. Help us to humbly trust in You and You alone, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
